A 43-year-old Springfield man has died from injuries sustained following a motorcycle wreck early on Jan. 17.

James O’Keefe was driving a 2004 Harley Davidson eastbound on Walnut Lawn at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday when police say the motorcycle struck the curb of the Maryland Avenue intersection. O’Keefe was thrown from the motorcycle. Springfield police were called to the scene at 1:32 a.m., and O’Keefe was pronounced dead at the crash site.

Both speed and intoxication are believed to be factors in the fatal crash, according to the Springfield Police Department. O’Keefe was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to police.

The investigation into O’Keefe’s death is ongoing. This is the second fatal motor vehicle crash of 2023 in Springfield.
