A man who was assaulted outside Rumors Cabaret in the early morning hours of Jan. 30 has died, and the Springfield Police Department is investigating the case as a homicide.

Jeffrey K. Brent, 37, from Springfield, Missouri, died Feb. 20 due to injuries sustained during the assault, which police responded to on Jan. 30 at 1:23 a.m. According to a Springfield police news release, a 911 caller reported an assault in the parking lot of the cabaret, located at 1750 S. Glenstone Ave. When they arrived, police found Brent, who had suffered life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital. According to Brent’s obituary, he died at Mercy Hospital on Feb. 20.

“He graduated from Nixa High School in 2003 and (Missouri State University) in 2008,” according to the obituary. “Jeff was more than an ordinary super fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He followed their every move from a young age until the last game January 16 of this year and was still feeling that one. He enjoyed time playing both football and baseball and continued watching sports. He was always working out at 9round, climbing at Zenith, pranking his friends and co-workers and enjoyed family and friends, but he most enjoyed and cherished the time he spent with his wonderful daughter Paeson, who we know how much he loved.

“Jeff was a wonderful father, son, brother, uncle and friend. We love you Jeff.”

Memorial services will be Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at Gorman Scharpf Funeral Home.
