If you’re looking to get more involved in city government, here’s your chance. Applications to run for mayor and five Springfield City Council seats open at 8 a.m. Oct. 3.

Those wishing to serve on Springfield’s City Council can pick up packets from the city clerk, or review the information on the city’s website once applications are open. Petitions must be obtained through the Springfield City Clerk’s Office and can’t be downloaded.

Petitions must be turned in to the Office of the City Clerk during normal business hours (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) between Dec. 5, 2022, and Jan. 17, 2023. If special accommodations are needed, contact City Clerk Anita Cotter at (417) 864-1651.

Six seats will be up for election on April 4, 2023. They are:

  • Mayor (currently Ken McClure)
  • Zone 1 (currently Monica Horton)
  • Zone 2 (currently Abe McGull)
  • Zone 3 (currently Mike Schilling)
  • General Seat C (currently Andy Lear)
  • General Seat D (currently Richard Ollis)

The winner of the race in Zone 1 will serve the remaining two years of an unexpired term. That seat was previously held by Angela Romine, who vacated her seat to run against Lincoln Hough for State Senate. Monica Horton was appointed to serve until the next election.

To be eligible to run for mayor or city council, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

  • Must be a registered voter in the city of Springfield
  • Must have been a resident of the city of Springfield for at least two years prior appointment
  • Those running for zone council seats must have been a resident of the zone in which they are running for at least one year immediately prior to appointment
  • Must not be disqualified under state law RsMO 115.306.1 (felony conviction)
  • Must have completed and filed Missouri Department of Revenue form 5120 per state law RsMO 115.306(2).
