Text from our SGF Weekend email newsletter, written by Managing Editor Brittany Meiling

If you haven’t been living under a rock, then you know what’s going on in University Heights. The land owner wants a big ol’ mixed use development built. Some neighbors don’t. It’s been a whole thing for those guys. But now, it might be a whole thing for the rest of us. Rance Burger broke news this week that City Council might put a pause on the matter — and take a moment to pull back and think about Springfield’s long-term vision.

Burger explains the details in his latest story, which spurred this KSMU interview with him on the topic. (He’s no Eleanor Beardsley, but I have to say… Burger’s got that radio timbre. Must be all those years as a sports podcaster.)

In more Burger news, check out his story on James River Freeway’s multimillion-dollar overhaul, which might affect your commute. This story has some rad infographics by Shannon Cay, and a map of where the roadwork is taking place.

Let’s move on to romance. If you’re like Walmart and already thinking about candy hearts and roses, then check out the Springfield Symphony Orchestra’s first show of the new year. The concert, titled “The Great Lover,” invites the audience to meditate on love themes.

Don’t miss Springfield’s MLK Jr. events this weekend! There is a film showing today and a church service on Sunday. Check out Steve Pokin’s story for details.

Happy Saturday!
