OPINION |

by Matthew Hicks, Springfield

response to previous letter to the editor

First, in regards to the bill aimed at criminalizing homelessness, making an act illegal rarely ends the act, and criminalizing simply surviving without a home is a legislative action so cruel only the Missouri GOP could have thought it up.

Second, I agree that religious organizations should take a step up in helping the impoverished in this area. However, in my view, mega-churches and huge evangelical organizations do little to aid the impoverished in our community, seeking instead to focus on fighting a culture war and inviting Josh Hawley to speak at their macho man conference

Ultimately we the people can’t expect religious organizations to pick up the slack from our Republican-controlled state government, because sadly they’re working hand in hand.
