We will be making important changes soon in how you use content from the Springfield Daily Citizen.

Starting June 13, we will begin limiting free access to most of our stories.

  • First, if you have not already, you will need to register — for free — on the site by providing an email address to continue reading.
  • We encourage you to set a password once you’ve registered — that’s the easiest way for you to secure your account.
  • After you’ve registered, you will initially be able to read five articles in a month for free, and then you will need to subscribe to read most of our content. Over time, the number of free articles will be reduced.
  • Our monthly subscription rate won’t change — it will stay $9.99 — but our trial offer, currently $79.99 for a full year, will only be available for a short time after June 13.

As we prepared for the mid-February launch of the Springfield Daily Citizen, many people had a simple question, and it was not about the need for an independent news source for Springfield, or even whether we would be charging for access to our content. The question was simply: “How much will it cost?”

Our annual budget for the Daily Citizen is roughly $1 million — with about 70 percent going to pay for the staff and freelance writers, photographers and artists who bring you the news. Relying on reader subscriptions as a key source of support is a critical part of our plan to build and sustain a nonprofit, nonpartisan and accountable news source that is run by and for the community. We also expect to continue to get funding from business sponsors, and ongoing philanthropy from people who believe deeply in our mission.

With the support of readers, we pledge to reinvent local news by telling the stories of our community in an impartial way. We serve as a catalyst for good, inspiring citizens to take action on the issues that are important to them. Plus, we are helping readers connect to the community and discover the best of the Ozarks — arts, culture, food, and the great outdoors. All that — and Steve Pokin columns, too — for $9.99 per month, or less for an annual subscription.

We always knew it would be important that readers see value in what we do — enough value to pay roughly $10 per month, a little more than you might pay for a fast food meal, or a couple of trips to your favorite coffee shop. And we believe news worth publishing — news you can use, and news you can trust — is news worth paying for.

If you would like to talk about it, please reach out to me, or contact Chief Development Officer Judi Kamien, or Managing Editor Brittany Meiling.
