OPINION|

by Patrick Warren Kelly, Springfield

During a school board meeting on Febuary 13, 2024, Steve Makoski brought out a paddle and urged a return to corporal punishment.

While one could argue that bringing out an actual paddle was inappropriate, one thing for certain is the fact that corporal punishment has been found to be ineffective.

According to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, school corporal punishments have a negative correlation with school performance as well as generally detrimental effects on a child’s cognitive and behavioral functioning.

Due to Steve’s support for such a thing, I believe that it would be a wise idea to consider voting against him when the next school board election comes up.
