It’s official: Lincoln Hough, a Republican state senator representing Springfield in the Missouri Capitol, is running for lieutenant governor.

Hough confirmed his candidacy with the Missouri Independent on Feb. 22, just a few weeks after telling the Springfield Daily Citizen he was considering entering the race.

He enters a crowded Republican primary field that includes fellow state Sen. Holly Thompson Rehder, Sikeston; Missouri Speaker of the House Dean Plocher, St. Louis; Franklin County Clerk Tim Baker; St. Louis-area businessman Paul Berry III and Philip Cotrone. State Rep. Richard Brown of Kansas City and Anastasia Syes are on the Democratic ticket.

Hough’s campaign finance committee reported more than $405,000 on hand in its January quarterly report. Only Plocher reported more money on hand in his January quarterly report.

In an earlier interview with the Daily Citizen, Hough referred to himself as “the guy that the administration goes to to get things done,” and touted his track record, including his sponsorship of a 2022 income tax cut and recent infrastructure investments.

Hough, who currently serves as the chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, was first elected to the upper chamber of the Missouri General Assembly in 2018, and was reelected in 2022. He previously served three terms in the Missouri House of Representatives from 2010 to 2016 and one term on the Greene County Commission. Hough is currently set to term out of the Senate in 2026.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

Editor’s note: A previous version of this story indicated former state legislator Bob Onder was running for lieutenant governor. Onder is instead running for Congress, and seeks the Republican nomination in Missouri’s 3rd Congressional District.
